Baby Shower Tips with Big City Moms

We asked baby shower experts Risa Goldberg and Leslie Venokur of Big City Moms for their advice on planning a memorable baby shower.

Baby showers are a fun way to get together with friends while also getting prepared for your newest arrival. But with so many cute baby shower ideas on Pinterest and elsewhere, planning a baby shower can be a little overwhelming!

That’s why we asked baby shower experts Risa Goldberg and Leslie Venokur of Big City Moms for their advice on planning a memorable baby shower.

Risa and Leslie founded Big City Moms over twelve years ago with weekly events for working moms. Today, Big City Moms has over 300,000 members, a strong social media community, events every day, and a trademarked “Biggest Baby Shower Ever!” event which attracts a sold-out crowd of new and expectant moms.

Needless to say, Risa and Leslie know a thing or two about baby showers! Here is our conversation with them about planning the perfect baby shower:

What are your favorite baby shower activities?

“We love to include activities that create lasting memories for the mom-to-be and her baby. Have your guests design a onesie for the new arrival, or a craft that mom can use in the baby’s nursery. Create a piece of advice for the new parents and have the mom read them out loud and guess who gave her the advice.”

“We also love games that are particularly helpful to the mom too. For example, having mom face-off between her guests on changing diapers or swaddling is not only fun, but a great learning experience!”

“For second and third time moms, make the shower have a theme as they probably don't need so much gear and “stuff”. If everyone goes off the same theme - i.e. building a library, making the home safe, they can expand on what they already have and still make their new bundle of joy feel special. It’s also a great idea to include the big brother/sister so that they don’t feel left out.”

What are some staple items no baby shower should be without?

“Plan the shower around what the mom-to-be loves. Whether it’s a season, a color, or a character, make it meaningful. When planning, make sure you keep her tastes in mind. If she loves a particular sweet, make sure it’s there.”

What are some go-to gift ideas?

“Every mom needs diapers and she can never have too many! Also make sure that if she’s registered somewhere that you buy off of her registry. While you can also get a gift that’s more personal to both you and the mom-to-be, if she’s requesting gear, chances are she really needs it!”

What is something that springtime baby showers can do to make it special for this time of year?

“Flowers!! This is the time of year when some of the most gorgeous flowers are in bloom. Use them to your advantage and fill the place with colorful blooms!”

What are some common baby shower faux-pas and how can one avoid them?

“Don’t go against the mom-to-be. If she’s asked for something or doesn’t want something, make sure that you go with her wishes. Make sure the shower is specific to the mom-to-be and what she likes, not yours.”

“Shower or sprinkle”? What is your opinion on baby showers for mothers who have previously had children?

“We think if you have loved ones that want to share in your special news, do it!”

Baby Shower Bliss

This spring as you plan for your or your friend’s baby shower, just remember to have a great time celebrating the joy of a new life and let the stress go!

Thank you to Risa and Leslie of Big City Moms for sharing their helpful hints!
