Registry Survival Guide

Registering for your baby shower can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be!

If you’re an expectant mother, congratulations! At Britax we love celebrating the joy that comes with a beautiful baby joining a family. Of course, this is an exciting time in your life, but then you have a sudden realization: “Holy cow! We’re going to need a lot of stuff!” That’s where a good baby shower comes in.

We know that registering for baby gear can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Check out these helpful hints for getting started:

Why Register?

A baby shower is a celebration of a new life entering the world – not just for the mom-to-be but for her family and friends as well! Loved ones will be just as excited as you are, and they will want to share that love by “showering” you with gifts. Yes, like it or not, gifts will start flowing from every direction; so you’ll want to provide them with some guidance by starting a baby registry.

It may feel strange to ask friends and family for gifts, but here’s a secret: they want to buy baby stuff! You won’t have to worry about twisting grandma’s arm to buy cute baby clothes. However, a registry is important because it helps those who are less baby-savvy (e.g. clueless little brothers) and those who have their own ideas on parenting (e.g. over-zealous aunties) know what your parenting style will be and what you really need.

You may feel bad at first, but not as bad as you’d feel opening up 100 packs of onesies (and nothing else!).

Also, a registry allows multiple friends and family members pool their resources to get big ticket items like cribs, car seats, and strollers.

Getting Started

The first rule of baby registry is give yourself time! There will be so many choices and opinions pulling you in different directions, and you will want to consider them carefully.

The second rule is to bring along someone you trust – your spouse, your mother, your sister, your BFF – for support. Registering with a loved one is not only more fun, it also helps you decide what you really need and what you really don’t.

Also, be sure to cast a wide net and consult with moms you trust on what items were essential in their experience and which can be left on the shelf. Most moms are more than happy to share their experiences and expertise with moms-to-be on the realities of life with baby!

Where to Register

Nationwide baby goods retailers are great places to start a registry. Not only do they have just about any baby item you can imagine – their multiple locations allow relatives from all over participate in the fun.

Don’t have time to visit a store? Registering online is also a great way to streamline the registry process and some companies may have more items available online than in their in-store locations.

Registry Must-Haves

It’s a good idea to register for products that can fit in any budget – from low cost items like diapers to your dream stroller. Be creative – you’ll need gear not just for the baby, but also for you and for your home. Baby-proofing items like outlet covers or baby gates are very useful but don’t always make it onto registries.

Other must-have baby items include car seats and strollers. Of course, at Britax we know a thing or two about car seats and strollers! These are two great items for your registry, because they’re essential for mobility and the freedom to explore the world with your family.

If you’d like to cross two things off the list at once, consider getting a travel system which has both a stroller and a car seat. You’ll never have to worry about finding a stroller that is compatible with your car seat brand, and they’ll be guaranteed to match in color and style.

Shower Success!

Take a deep breath, take your time (and a friend!), and take these ideas into consideration. Your baby shower will be one of the happiest and memorable days of your life (though, we can think of one day coming soon that will be even more memorable!).
